Robert Downey Jr. disagreed with Chris Hemsworth, who said he was "replaceable" as Thor. AdvertisementRobert Downey Jr. disagreed with Chris Hemsworth after the "Thor" star said he was "replaceable" in the "Avengers" movies. "Hemsworth is, in my opinion, the most complex psyche out of all us Avengers. He's got wit and gravitas, but also such restraint, fire, and gentleness," Downey Jr. continued, before describing Hemsworth's work in "Thor: Ragnarok," "Avengers: Infinity War," and "Avengers: Endgame" as a "formidable hat trick." Downey Jr. and Chris Evans both left after "Endgame," and Scarlett Johansson exited following 2021's "Black Widow."

But the Hollywood strikes pushed the release date for "Deadpool & Wolverine, so "The Fall Guy" stepped in. 2012's "The Avengers" brought in $207 million opening weekend and grossed over $1.5 billion worldwide. 'The Fall Guy' doesn't need to earn what past Marvel titles did to be successfulRyan Gosling in "The Fall Guy." There have to be other big winners, and that's where "The Fall Guy" comes in. "The Fall Guy" is tracking in the mid-$30 million range for this weekend, multiple industry sources told BI.

For many it felt like a soothing balm, underscoring the kind of communal experience people were missing as the still-new coronavirus pandemic shuttered theaters. Even allowing for that, the operatic heights achieved by “Endgame,” which grossed nearly $2.8 billion worldwide, would have been difficult to replicate. Such a concept would have sounded particularly foreign in the run-up to “Endgame,” when Marvel and its leader, Kevin Feige, appeared to possess a Midas touch. Venezuelan filmgoers watch the first screening in Venezuela of Marvel Studios' "Avengers: Endgame" at a cinema in Caracas on April 26, 2019. For 20 years, Participant Media has been Hollywood’s pre-eminent maker of activist entertainment, backing socially conscious films like “An Inconvenient Truth,” a climate change cri de coeur, and “Wonder,” about a boy with birth defects. Its movies have won 21 Academy Awards. But the company never quite managed to do good while also making money, at least not consistently. Streaming services like Disney+ and Netflix have started to sell ads, and advertisers prefer all-audience, apolitical content. Eat-your-broccoli documentaries and dramas that explore underrepresented communities (both Participant sweet spots) are harder to sell than ever.

New York CNN —“Madame Web” swung to No. In November, “The Marvels” saw a lackluster $47 million in domestic sales its opening weekend, and DC’s “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” opened in December to a feeble $27.6 million. It’s still too soon to estimate gross domestic sales for “Madame Web,” but, by the time it exited theaters, “Morbius” had made just $73 million. But “Madame Web,” which released February 14, struggled to gain upward momentum even along its six-day opening, which straddled two holidays: Valentine’s Day and Presidents’ Day. Recent months have seen musical box office hits like “Wonka,” “Mean Girls,” and successful concert films from both Beyonce and Taylor Swift.

Chambers added, however, “We know the film is resonating with female audiences. To a degree, “The Marvels” was hurt by the actors’ strike, which prevented Ms. Larson and her co-stars from participating in promotional events — at least until Wednesday, when the 118-day strike was resolved. Superhero fatigue also probably played a role. Audiences have started to become pickier about these spectacles, with duds like “Blue Beetle” and “Shazam! Fury of the Gods,” both from DC Studios, as recent evidence.

"Barbenheimer" exploded over the weekend, generating an estimated $235.5 million in ticket sales and reinvigorating the domestic box office. "It was a truly historic weekend and continues the positive box office momentum of 2023," said Michael O'Leary, president and CEO of the National Association of Theatre Owners. Some box office analysts project that Monday's official weekend numbers could be quite a bit higher than Sunday's estimates, and push "Barbenheimer" weekend up the charts. The success of "Barbenheimer" comes at a time when the domestic box office has faced some hurdles. They've reignited the summer box office flame, and they've proven that studios can be a little more aggressive with counter-programming strategies in the future."

LONDON, June 28 (Reuters) - Activision Blizzard (ATVI.O) said its studio that developed "Call of Duty" would set up shop in Barcelona, putting into action its pledge to invest in Europe after Brussels approved Microsoft's $69 billion acquisition of the company in May. In contrast, it said it would "meaningfully expand" its investment and workforce in the European Union after the deal received the green light there. Microsoft and Activision Blizzard are battling antitrust regulators on both sides of the Atlantic to clinch the deal, the biggest ever in video gaming. Activision Blizzard CEO Bobby Kotick and his Microsoft counterpart Satya Nadella are due to testify in a court in San Francisco on Wednesday to urge a judge to allow the merger. Microsoft is appealing the British veto with the "aggressive" support of Activision.

2” [2017], and then we talked about it happening in “Infinity War” and that worked better for the story. I knew that the whole trilogy is about Rocket, who we think of as a supporting character, becoming the captain of the Guardians. Drax realizes that he’s a father and that’s what he’s really good at — he’s not a destroyer. Well, Gamora’s death is the big one, but even her first kiss with Quill comes in “Infinity War” after the first two “Guardians” movies appear to be building to it. It wasn’t really about the kiss, it was about showing that they were now a couple.
And, for once, the success of a Marvel film could bode well for the future of its longtime adversary. On the theatrical side, DC Studios has announced five new projects that will roll out starting in 2025 with Gunn's own "Superman: Legacy." "And I think Marvel Studios, sooner rather than later, needs to tell us what's going on with Spider-Man." He sees this as the result of predictable plotlines within the genre that are repeated across both studios' films. Marvel Studios
A powerful new crop of AI tools, trained on vast troves of data online, can now generate essays, song lyrics and other written work in response to user prompts. While there are clearly limits for how well AI tools can produce compelling creative stories, these tools are only getting more advanced, putting writers like August on guard. But as part of their demands, the WGA is also fighting to protect their livelihoods from AI. Stephanie Elam/CNNWhile film and TV writers in Hollywood may currently be leading the charge, professionals in other industries will almost certainly be paying attention. “Watch this #WGA strike carefully,” Justine Bateman, a writer, director and former actress, wrote in a tweet shortly after the strike kicked off.

"The Way of Water" surpassed "Avengers: Infinity War" on Wednesday to become the No. "Obviously, I'm not going to be able to make 'Avatar' movies indefinitely, the amount of energy required," Cameron told The Hollywood Reporter in November.
Disney 's "Avatar: The Way of Water" has topped $2 billion at the global box office, making it the third James Cameron film to reach this benchmark. As of Sunday, "The Way of Water" had tallied $598 million from domestic ticket sales and $1.426 billion from foreign markets. "The film has now joined that very exclusive box office club and has made it look almost effortless," said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst at Comscore. As the industry rebounds, films like "The Way of Water" have proven that moviegoers are eager to return for big blockbuster spectacles. "Avatar: The Way of Water" is now the No. The sequel to the highest-grossing movie of all time became the sixth-biggest movie ever on Tuesday, topping "Spider-Man: No Way Home's" $1.92 billion at the global box office. The movie shows no signs of slowing down and is close to surpassing the worldwide box-office totals of the No. It still has a ways to go to catch the first "Avatar," which earned $2.9 billion worldwide, including $785 million in the US. But no matter where "The Way of Water" tops out at the box office, one thing is clear: the "Avatar" franchise is alive and well, even after a 13-year wait between movies.
Joe and Anthony Russo "won't be ready to do anything with Marvel until the end of the decade." The Russos made four movies for Marvel, including "Avengers: Endgame." The directors previously told Insider they had no plans to return, but seemed open to it. The duo made four movies for Marvel — 2014's "Captain America: The Winter Soldier," 2016's "Captain America: Civil War," 2018's "Avengers: Infinity War," and then "Endgame" in 2019. "It would be bigger than 'Infinity War' and 'Endgame,'" Joe said.
That would be one plausible explanation behind the great box office slowdown. Although three new movies opened nationwide, none were able to crack the top five on domestic charts and only two -- A24's satirical slasher "Bodies Bodies Bodies" and Lionsgate's vertigo-inducing thriller "Fall" -- managed to infiltrate the top 10. After two weeks on the big screen, the Brad Pitt-led "Bullet Train" has generated $54.4 million at the domestic box office. In eighth place, "Bodies Bodies Bodies" beat expectations with $3.2 million from 1,290 locations. That means "Maverick" is roughly $5 million away from dethroning Marvel's "Avengers: Infinity War" as the sixth-highest grossing movie in domestic box office history.
